Tips for Putting Face Frames Together

hidden compartment nightstand plans

The support structure of a cabinet is its face frames. They are made of metal or wood and form the drawer and door openings. Glue and clamps are the easiest method of assembly. A strong glue joint is created to hold the two pieces together. Although mechanical fasteners are more effective than clamps, it is important to fill any nail or screw holes prior to installing the face frames. Here are some useful tips for assembling face frames.

Face frames give strength to the front and sides of cabinets

Adding a face frame to your cabinets can make them look more professional. These frames can be used to align cabinets in a space that isn’t square. Choose a face frame that is about 1/2" smaller than the cabinet size you want when cutting your face frames. Gapping can be used to square up cabinets. After you've determined the dimensions of your face frame pieces, order them and then cut them on a tablesaw. Be sure to cut accurately while you are cutting the pieces so that they look nice. Once the pieces are cut and assembled, attach the bottom shelf with 1-1/4" pocket hole screws.

They can be used to create door and drawer openings

Doors, drawers, or cabinets are made easier by openings created by face frames. They are generally made of metal and wood, and can either be glued, or screwed to place. For the easiest assembly, use clamps and glue. A strong, permanent attachment is possible with a tight glue joint. Mechanical fasteners are also available if clamps prove too difficult. Fill in all nail and screw holes.

They can be made of wood or metal

A face frame is a framework that is built with vertical and horizontal pieces. It is mounted on the front of the case and includes rails, inner and outer stiles, which reach the frame. The wood glue used to attach the frame and carcass is wood brads. For securing the frame while it dries, wood glue is recommended. Wood brads are used wherever there is a void to attach the frame. Wood putty can be used to cover the holes if you want them to disappear.

They can be made of various widths

A cabinet's face frame is an important element of its aesthetics. The frame can be built in various widths, from 3/4" wide up to 2". Face frames are usually made from one-inch thick wood and assembled with a pocket screw joint. You also have the option of making your frame square or beaded. The size and number of openings are also customizable. Talk to a Customer Services Specialist to discuss the options and make the right choice for your cabinet.

These can be attached by using PVA glue, pocket hole joinery, or pocket hole jointery to a case

PVA glue and Kreg’s pocket hole joinery can be used to attach the face frames to a case. The frames can be hidden by using 3/8” dowels and plugs to secure them to the case. If you want to get the best results, make sure the frames are made of wood from a different species. Melamine-coated particleboard is an alternative that's more durable.

FAQ

How do you know which type of wood you are working with?

When purchasing wood, always check the label. The label should detail the wood species, its moisture content and whether it has been treated or not.

Do I need to be a genius to succeed in woodworking?

No. It is not rocket science to woodwork. You can create beautiful pieces of art by learning how to use simple power tools.

What woods can be used to make furniture?

Woods are classified by their hardness. Softwoods include cedar, pine, cedar, and Cypress. Because they resist rot, softwoods can be used to make outdoor furniture. The hardwoods include teak, maple, mahogany and oak. They are generally indoors as they don't weather well outside.

How To

How to join wood without using nails

Woodworking is an enjoyable hobby. Woodworking is a relaxing hobby that allows you to use your hands to create useful things from wood. You might want to join two pieces from the same wood, but you don't need to use nails. This article will demonstrate how to do so to preserve the beauty of your woodwork.

The first thing you'll need to do is cut off any rough edges from your pieces of wood before joining them together. You don't want to leave sharp corners that could cause problems later on down the road. Once you have done that, you can begin gluing your boards together.

When working with hardwood, glue should be applied only to one side. If you're using softwoods like pine or cedar, you should put glue on both sides. After applying the glue, press the boards firmly until they are completely stuck together. Before you proceed to the next step, be sure to let the glue dry completely.

After you have glued the boards together, drill holes in the joints where you intend to place screws. You can choose the type of screw to determine the size of your holes. For example, if your screw is a 1/2-inch wooden screw, drill a hole that is at minimum 3/4 inches deep.

Once you have drilled your holes you will need to drive the screws through each joint and into the backside. Avoid hitting the board's top surface. Otherwise, you could ruin the finish. Try to not hit the ends of the screws when driving the screws. This will avoid splitting in the wood's ends grain.

Now that your project is finished, you'll want to protect it from the elements. You can seal the furniture pieces or cover the top. You'll want a product that lasts for many years. There are many options: oil-based varnishes; polyurethane; shellac; lacquer.

You can find these products at most home improvement stores. Just make sure that you buy the right kind for the job. Keep in mind that certain finishes can be toxic and should not be used indoors. When handling certain finishes, wear protective gear.
