Traditional Swedish handicraft

The traditional Swedish handicraft for carving a Dala horse is a traditional art that is made of pine wood and is a popular souvenir of Sweden. The horse's form and size may vary slightly between each other because these carvings, unlike other crafts are handcrafted. A few aficionados claim that only Dala Horses manufactured in Nusnas can be considered authentic. In 1926, Anders Henriksson began selling Dala Horses in Nusnas. Jannes Olsson was joined by his sons Jannes Olsson. They began to take the tradition seriously and opened their own small workshop.

The Biblical Jonah story explains that Jonah used a wooden horse as a means of transporting himself in the desert. This is the inspiration for the Dala Horse's original design. The carved wooden horse was painted in rich colors and adorned with floral designs. The wooden horse became popular in the 19th-century. Dala Horses were made with wood scraps, paint-pigment, and long winter nights. There are many traditions for carving Dala horses, and they can be done by both woodsmen or soldiers. In the 1870s, they were painted in vivid colors and wore floral-patterned saddles.

Origin

Dala horses are a Swedish tradition. Historically, the style has roots in the paintings of Swedish furniture. This elaborate ornamental style was popularized on furniture in the 17th and 18th centuries. Most often, these paintings were done by itinerant painters from the Dalarna region of Sweden. Since then, Dala horse painting has been a popular art form.

basic woodworking skills

Many stories have been told about this custom. Some believe it is a legacy of the 15th-century, when foresters from central Sweden carved toy horses over fire. Swedish furniture makers have used slow-growing pine from the Dalarna forests for years. It is also possible that they used wood scraps. The Dala horse tradition is alive and well, even though there are no conclusive evidence. This horse has become Sweden's national symbol.

Size

A Dala horse, a traditional toy, has distinct features. The size and shape of a Dala horse vary, and there are many different types. They come in different sizes, including medium-sized, stocky, or lean horses. They were created in Sweden's Mora village of Dalarna and are very popular around the world. They were originally carved by Swedish woodcutters in their spare time, away from the responsibilities of their daily occupation. The Dala horse is one the most durable and longest-lasting wooden toys.

Although Dala horses are widely popular in Sweden, they had little recognition outside of Sweden until 1939 when a 2.5-meter model was displayed outside the Swedish pavilion at the World Exhibition in New York. The Dala Horse was loved by so many people that they were sent to America in 1940. Today, Dala Horses are primarily orange and red in color, but they can be painted any color, or left plain. In Sweden, the Avesta Municipality displays one of the largest Dala Horses.

Color

You've found the right place if you ever wanted to learn how you can color a Dala Horse. These horses are a symbol of Sweden for many years. Since their domestication they have been a valuable resource. They can be used to transport heavy items and as a vehicle for transportation. While the earliest references to Dala horses date back to 1623, it was Stika Erik Hansson, a native of Sweden, who introduced the two-colour technique, which is still popular today. Hansson lived in Risa (a town in Mora Parish) and was buried in Bega Cemetery. Stanton County is Nebraska. In later years, Erik Erikson became Hansson and moved to America.

FAQ

What's the difference between a hobbyist and a professional woodworker?

Hobbyists enjoy creating things out of wood. Professionals tend to focus on the quality. Hobbyists take great pride in their creations, and share them with family and friends. Professionals will spend hours researching designs before they begin working on a project. They will meticulously plan every detail of their work from choosing the right materials to finishing it.

Can I refinish my own furniture?

Yes! There are many options for refinishing furniture that you don't need to hire a professional. Here are some suggestions:

To remove stains and scratches, use sandpaper. Then wipe down the surface with a clean cloth.

Use clear polyurethane varnish. Before moving furniture, let dry completely.

Use acrylic paint to paint furniture.

Instead of painting, use stain. Furniture will look richer with the stain.

Use shellac wax. You can protect your wood with wax and give it shine.

How long does it take to finish a piece of furniture?

It all depends upon the size of your piece of furniture. For smaller projects such as picture frames and boxes, it can take less than a day to complete. Larger projects, such as desks and dining tables, can take several days. It takes time and effort to properly stain the wood.

How To

How to drive a nail through wood

First, choose the right size and type of tool to drive a nail through wood. Claw hammers include mallets, claw hammers (sledgehammers), mallets, ball-peen hammers, hatchets, and mallets. Each type of hammer comes with its advantages and disadvantages. For example, a claw hammer works best when you want to hit something hard, like nails; however, it's difficult to control precisely where the blow lands. The sledgehammer works well for large areas, but is too heavy for smaller tasks.

After choosing the right hammer, place your hand flat against the side of the head so that the handle rests comfortably in your palm. Hold the handle in your hand, but don’t force it too hard that you break. Hold the hammer straight up, keeping your wrist relaxed. Swing the hammer back towards the ground, with your aim at the middle of the nail. You should feel the impact from the hammer striking a nail. Try swinging a hammer using a block wood to practice until you are comfortable.

Hold the hammer near your body until you're ready for the nail to be driven. Position the nail, so it's perpendicular to the surface of the wood. Keep your eyes focused directly on the tip of the nail. Then, swing the hammer forward. Next, follow the motion of your hammerhead. Keep doing this until you are comfortable with the swing. Once you've mastered the technique, try adding power to your swings. Try holding the hammer above your shoulder and bring it down forcefully. This will help you put more energy behind each of your moves.

Once you've made the first nail hole, take out the hammer. To remove the remainder of the nails, you can use a screwdriver/pry bar. Keep the nails heads in line with the surface of the board to prevent splitting the wood.
