face frames

You need the right tools if you are new to woodturning. You can achieve the desired effect with hollowing tools, but it is important to choose carefully. These articles will help you understand the basic concepts of the Osprey Hunter, Swan neck and Hercules. You can then move on to the more advanced tools for hollowing. This is a brief history on hollowing tools for those who are curious.

Hunter

Hunter hollowing tools are a quality brand. These carbide-tools have been specifically made for hollowing or end-grain. Hunter's unique tool-system is centered around an oversized, circular carbide cutter that lasts 100x longer then comparable HSS ones. The tool is also easy to sharpen and can rotate to make a new cutting edge as needed.

Hercules

The Hercules Hollowing Tool enables woodturners to perform a variety of tasks, including making interrupted cuts or roughing up bowls. The square shape of the tool is intended to absorb shock impacts and distribute them to the rest and lathe. The 45-degree flat surface of the shank allows for stable cutting, even with interrupted cuts. This tool is available in both 5/8" and 3/8" sizes.

Osprey

Osprey hollowing tools are a great way to get a smooth finish on your bowls. They are available in two different sizes and come with a T-9 flag style Torx wrench for rotating the cutter. They can be used as any other gouge, making them a popular choice for pen turners. An Osprey can be a wonderful tool to help you get started in woodturning.

Hercules Swan neck

A Hercules Swanneck Hollowing Tool is a unique tool that has a round shape. This allows for many cutting applications including side grain work, blind turning, undercutting and blind turning. It comes in three different lengths to fit your needs: the 14'' (851H) is intended for end grain use in projects that do not require deep cuts, the 20'' (855H) allows for greater reach, and the 24'' (859H) is fabricated from a substantial section steel. The round shank is placed against the tool rest.

Osprey has two sets of swan neck hollowing tools. The unique shape of the swan neck tools makes them ideal for side-grain work such as blind turning, undercutting and blind turning. The 14 inch (851H version) is best suited to end-grain projects. While the larger (20"'' and 24-inch (8599) tools can be used side-grain and ends-grain respectively, the larger (20"'' and 24-inch (8599) versions are equally suitable. Each tool has a steel neck and a long, sharpened carbide-cutting tip.

Carbide cutters

A carbide tipped carving tool can be a valuable addition to your toolkit. These tools provide an unparalleled cutting experience. These tools can also reduce strain, increase productivity and help with stress. Carbide-tipped tools for carving are sharp and last for years. They can be used for all woodturning projects from wood sculpture to hollowing forms.

Simple Hollowing System

The Simple Hollowing System for Woodturning takes the tools from the hands of the turning machine and allows the user to direct the cutting process with precision. This system consists of a mounting plate, an articulate arm, and a laser. This system is compatible any tool with a 1/2" handle tang. It retails for $425 and includes shipping. You can also purchase optional tools to complete your system.

How To

Tips for driving a nail in wood

The first step in driving a nail into wood is to choose the correct size and type of hammer. The most commonly used types of Hammers are claw hammers. Each kind of hammer has its own advantages and disadvantages. A claw hammer, for example, is the best choice if you need to hit nails hard. However, it's not easy to know exactly where the impact will land. A sledgehammer is useful for striking large areas at once but too heavy to be effective for smaller tasks.

Once you have chosen the right hammer for you, put your hand flat against its side so that it rests comfortably in the palm of your hand. You can grip the handle with your fingers, but not so tight that it causes injury. You should hold the hammer straight-up, with your wrist still relaxed. You should then swing the hammer straight up, keeping your wrist relaxed. You should feel the impact from the hammer striking a nail. You can practice swinging the hammer with a block or wood until you feel the rhythm.

Hold the hammer near your body until you're ready for the nail to be driven. The nail should be perpendicular to wood's surface. Your eyes should be focused on the nail's tip. Swing the hammer forward, then follow through with the motion of the hammerhead. Keep doing this until you are comfortable with the swing. Once you've mastered the technique, try adding power to your swings. You can hold the hammer over your shoulder and forcefully bring it down. This way, you'll be able to put more energy behind your blows.

Once you have made the first hole, remove your hammer. Use a pry bar or screwdriver to pull out the rest of the nails. Keep the nails heads in line with the surface of the board to prevent splitting the wood.
