How To

How to join wood without using nails

Many people love woodworking. It's fun and relaxing because you can use your hands to make something useful from wood. However, there are times when you want to join two pieces of wood together without having to use nails. This article will teach you how to do this to keep your woodwork projects looking great.

Before joining the pieces of wood together, you will need to first trim any edges. You don't want to leave sharp corners that could cause problems later on down the road. After you have completed this step, you are ready to glue your boards together.

If you are working with hardwood, only one side should be glue. For softwoods like cedar and pine, glue should be applied to both sides. After applying the glue, press the boards firmly until they are completely stuck together. After applying the glue, let dry the boards before proceeding to the next stage.

After you have glued the boards together, drill holes in the joints where you intend to place screws. Depending on the type of screw that you use, the size of these holes will vary. If you are going to use a half-inch wood screw, you will need to drill at least 3/4 inch deep.

Once you have drilled your holes you will need to drive the screws through each joint and into the backside. Don't hit the board's surface. You could damage the finish. When driving the screws, try to avoid hitting the ends of the screws too much. This will avoid splitting in the wood's ends grain.

Now that your project is finished, you'll want to protect it from the elements. You have two options: seal the whole furniture piece or just the top. You want it to last years, so you can use any product. Oil-based varnishes are, among others, polyurethanes shellac, laquer, and other oil-based products.

These products can usually be found at any home improvement store. Just make sure that you buy the right kind for the job. Also, remember that some finishes are toxic and should never be used indoors. Protective gear should always be worn when handling these finishes.
