FAQ

What tools work best for me?

It's important that you consider your needs and preferences while shopping for tools. Are you more comfortable with plastic or metal handles? What size are you most comfortable using for screws and nails? Would you rather use hand tools than power tools?

Can I make a living doing this?

Yes! In fact, many woodworkers already do. According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), woodworkers earned a median annual salary of $34,000 in May 2012. This is significantly higher than the national average, which is $31,000 per year.

What is the difference between plywood and particle board?

Plywood is a combination of layers of wood, which are then pressed together under high pressure. Plywood can come in many thicknesses and is used for flooring and cabinets. Particle board can be made from sawdust, resin, and then compressed to make large blocks. This board is commonly used in home improvement projects. Both types of boards are durable and easy to cut.

Do I have to refinish my furniture?

Yes! Yes! There are many methods to refinish antique furniture without hiring a professional. Here are some ideas:

Use sandpaper for removing stains and scratches. Next, wipe the surface clean with a damp cloth.

Clear polyurethane varnish should be applied. Allow to dry thoroughly before moving furniture.

Acrylic paint is a great way to paint furniture.

Stain can be used instead of paint. Furniture will look richer with the stain.

Shellac wax is applied. This will protect and shine the wood.

Statistics

  • In 2014, there were just over 237,000 jobs for all woodworkers, with other wood product manufacturing employing 23 percent; wood kitchen cabinets and countertop manufacturing employing 21 percent. (theartcareerproject.com)
  • The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that the number of jobs for woodworkers will decline by 4% between 2019 and 2029. (indeed.com)
  • Average lumber prices rose about 600 percent between April 2020 and May 2021. (familyhandyman.com)
  • If your lumber isn't as dry as you would like when you purchase it (over 22% in Glen Huey's opinion…probably over 10-15% in my opinion), then it's a good idea to let it acclimate to your workshop for a couple of weeks. (woodandshop.com)

How to make wood joints

This tutorial will teach you how to join two pieces wood together. We will use the pocket hole joint, which is drilling holes in the wood to join them. This method is great if your wood's straight and smooth. You may want to consider other methods, such as dowel joining. These are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. To start, measure and mark where you want to put the pocket hole joint. You will then drill 3/4" deep holes through each piece of wood with a jigsaw, handheld drilling machine, or hand-held drill.
  2. Sand Smooth. The wood's edges can be sanded to prevent splitting.
  3. Glue the two sides of the wood together. Apply glue to the sides of both wood. Let the wood sit for 5 minutes, then clamp it together.
  4. Clamp the Pieces Together. Once the glue has dried, clamp the pieces together so they are flush.
  5. Trim Joinery. Trim the excess wood around the joint after the glue has dried completely.

Be sure to leave enough space between each piece so that they can be turned inside-out.
